![]() ![]() I expect to see Welsh, English and Irish halfbacks but no Irish presence in the back three -Zebo hasn’t scored in the Six Nations since 2013. With only one Six Nations start under his belt this year O’Mahony has emerged as a serious contender for the tour. Just after the Scotland game I wrote that the Irish backrow needed to be recalibrated -the redeployment of Stander at the base of the scrum and POM at blindside. In a wonderful contest in Dublin O’Mahony’s stock rose as sharply as Haskell’s and Itoje’s seemed to fall. ![]() As for Ireland, had they started against Scotland with the intensity they started the England game -we would have had a very different Six Nations.įrom a Lions point of view this may well have been the perfect Six Nations -no egos inflated yet no confidences destroyed.Īs for prospective Lions -if the squad was picked tomorrow it would draw its front row options from Ireland, England and Ken Owens -the second rows from England, Wales and a younger Gray brother -and the back rows from Wales, England and Ireland.īefore last weekend the back row would have been sourced from England, Wales and Stander but for me that changed on Saturday night. England dominant yet fallible, Scotland rising once again from a long hibernation and Wales both lucky in victory and unlucky in defeat. Greatness lives in one who triumphs equally over defeat and victory.”Īnd that maybe is the story of this year’s Six Nations -impressive victories to take pride in and yet defeat for all. Some are destroyed by defeat, and some made small and mean by victory. ![]() “ Somewhere in the world there is a defeat for everyone. ![]()
